Obituaries

Deaths, in chronological order of occurrence.

Death of Pastor Brian D. Jones. Jones PhD, Brian D. (1947 - 2008). Brian Jones died quietly from liver failure on the morning of September 3. Pastor Jones had served as a Bible instructor and as a minister in various parts of North America since 1978. He was a gifted preacher, presenter, and author. He wrote several articles and Sabbath School Quarterlies. His books included Prophets of Fire, His Wondrous Cross, and others. In the latter, Jones wrote “The cross is no longer an object of loathing to me. It has become the tree of life to my soul, the instrument of my salvation, the mainstay of my comfort, the inspiration of my service, the bulwark of my values, the monitor of my conscience, the gateway of my liberty, and, with the repentant thief, the trysting place of my hopes. Without the cross of Jesus, life on this earth would be devoid of meaning, destitute of hope. But with the cross, the prospects of redemption, righteousness, and renewal, are overflowingly abundant and available to all. I write this book as a former rebel against the government of God, now cheerfully reporting for duty and pledging allegiance to the conquering Hero of Calvary, who has conquered my heart by the solemn power and majesty of His love displayed on the cross” (His Wondrous Cross, p. 7). Just a few Sabbaths ago, when Pr. Jones was unable to preach at one of his churches, the congregation was invited into his home where he preached from a chair beside his bed; such is but one example of his quality as a worker. Pastor Jones is survived by wife Elizabeth and daughter Rebekah. Seeing my friend Brian again is an anticipation that will make resurrection day even sweeter. Please come Lord Jesus. —LK. 2008-05-02: Standish MD, Russell R. (1933 - 2008). Russell Standish was killed in an automobile accident in Australia on May 2. Characteristically, he was enroute to a speaking engagement. Both, Standish and the driver, Cliff Cocks, were killed. Occupants of the other vehicle were injured. Russell is survived by his wife, Glenice, his three sons, Stephen, James, and Timothy, and his twin brother, Colin. Other places, no doubt, will detail the contributions of Russell, including numerous books, many of them cowritten with his brother Colin. One of his most recent contributions was a paper he presented at the 50th Anniversary QOD Conference held at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Let our prayers be for Glenice, Russell’s wife, his brother Colin, and for family members and close friends. In many ways, Russell left that kind of example that can only be explained by a close personal walk with Jesus. —GCO. Published on 2008-05-08 04:53Z
